The Taste of Daxi

Daxi's culinary memory is inseparable from soy. From the dried tofu that once fed dockworkers in the river-trade era, to the tofu pudding and sweet potato cake sold at street corners, these flavors still drift through the old street today.

Black Dried Tofu

Daxi's most iconic snack. Blocks of tofu are slow-braised in a dark, herb-scented soy stock until deeply colored and firm. Its roots trace back to the river-trade era, when soybeans arrived by boat and dried tofu became a staple food for dockworkers — a tradition that has since grown into dozens of shops, each with its own house recipe.

豆花

Tofu Pudding

This silky soybean custard is a familiar way to cool down on the old street, served in a light syrup with toppings like peanuts or tapioca pearls. In Daxi, tofu pudding is often made by the same workshops that produce the town's dried tofu, using the same soybeans and mountain water for a softer, gentler version of that same soy fragrance.

Sweet Potato Cake

A street snack made by mashing steamed local sweet potato and wrapping it in a pastry shell, then pan-fried or deep-fried until crisp outside and soft within. It's one of the most common hand-held treats for wandering the old street.

Daxi's Living Traditions

Daxi's festivals and beliefs largely grew out of the merchant community built during the river-trade era — each celebration is a continuation of the town's collective memory.

Lunar June 24th: The Puji Tang Guan Gong Procession

Every year on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, Daxi holds its largest annual celebration — a day locals call their "second Lunar New Year." The festival honors Guan Gong (Holy Emperor Guan), the deity enshrined at Puji Tang, who is also understood locally to represent the early settlers who built Daxi's commercial foundations and were later deified.

On this day, palanquins and large embroidered processional banners sponsored by the town's traditional guilds (社頭) parade through the old street to drums and gongs, with residents of all ages lining the route and households setting out offering tables. The hand-embroidered banners, plaques, and processional regalia are made and preserved across generations by local guilds — work that, like much of Daxi's cultural upkeep, has long been quietly carried by the town's women.

Lunar February 11th: The Sacred Pig Ceremony at Fu-ren Temple

Built in 1813 and dedicated to Kaizhang Shengwang and Mazu, Fu-ren Temple hosts a "sacred pig" (神豬) competition once every decade, with Daxi's ten founding clans taking turns as sponsors. Families raise and elaborately decorate ceremonial pigs for offering on the 11th day of the second lunar month — another deeply historic tradition in the town's ritual calendar.
