Three Curated Routes
Daxi (大溪, formerly Da-kekan / 大嵙崁) sits on a river terrace above the Dahan River, and its history is written into everything here: the baroque shophouse facades funded by the river trade in tea, camphor and timber; the century-old braised-tofu stalls that fed dock workers; the ancient porter trails that once carried goods over the hills to the mountain villages of Fuxing; and the temples where the town still gathers each year for its two biggest festivals. These three routes lean into the details a resident would point out, drawn from local blogs, hiking-community trail notes, and Taoyuan City heritage records.
Roughly 2.5 km, entirely on foot
A half-day (extend to full-day with the dessert crawl) walking loop through Daxi's baroque shophouse district. This is the town's commercial heart since the Qing dynasty river-port era — expect ornate 1920s facades, a 300-year-old temple, and the dish Daxi is most famous for: braised tofu (豆干). On weekends, a free hands-on wood-planing workshop at the Wood Art Ecomuseum adds a genuine DIY moment to the walk.

Daxi Bridge
Start here. Built in the 1930s and restored in 2004 to echo the baroque facades of the old street, this pedestrian bridge spans the Dahan River gorge with ornate arches and balustrades. A glass-walled elevator connects the bridge to Zhongzheng Park below. At night the bridge is lit gold, and locals treat the far end as an informal sunset-watching spot — worth the ten extra minutes before heading into the old street.
Insider tip ·
Cross the bridge and look back — the view of the old street's rooftops rising above the river terrace is the shot most tourist photos of Daxi never show.

Wood Art Ecomuseum — Bushido Hall & Building No. 1
Rather than one building, this is a scattered network of restored Japanese-era structures — a former police dormitory, a judo/kendo hall (Bushido Hall), the old town hall, and more. Bushido Hall is the standout: dark timber, a raised tatami floor, and a quiet dignity most visitors, rushing to the food stalls, skip entirely. DO IT YOURSELF: at the Craft Exchange Hall, a free drop-in wood-planing workshop runs most weekends in four short 25-minute sessions — a carpenter demonstrates traditional hand tools and lets visitors try planing wood themselves. Capacity is small (about 10 people per session), first-come, first-served.
Insider tip ·
Time your visit for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon if you want the wood-planing session — sessions run roughly 2:00, 2:30, 3:05 and 3:35 PM, and the line forms outside before each one starts.

Fu-ren Temple
Built in 1813 by the Zhangzhou merchant families who financed the old street, Fu-ren Temple honors Kaizhang Shengwang, a patron deity of Zhangzhou settlers, alongside Mazu in the upper hall. It sits where the busy shophouse street splits around it, so the temple square has doubled as a public plaza for two centuries — and once a decade, hosts a spectacular "sacred pig" competition each lunar February 11th, sponsored in turn by Daxi's ten founding clans.
Insider tip ·
If you're here on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, skip this entry and go straight to Puji Tang at the far end of the street instead — that's the date of Daxi's biggest festival, a day-long parade locals call their "second Lunar New Year."

Old Uncle's Braised Tofu
Daxi's soybean-processing trade dates to the river-port days; today the town has dozens of tofu shops, but this stall's queue is the local litmus test. Order the combination plate for dried tofu, vegetarian tripe (a chewy gluten product, not meat), and their braised egg, which regulars say is the real standout.
Insider tip ·
Ask for the sauce on the side if you're not used to Taiwanese braising spices — it's saltier than the tofu itself and meant for dipping, not drenching.

Xinnan Old Street
One block over from the crowded main drag, Xinnan Street preserves the same baroque-meets-Minnan shophouse architecture with almost none of the foot traffic. It was Daxi's administrative and education quarter in the Qing and Japanese eras; today several of the old houses have been converted into small craft studios, galleries, and quiet coffee shops. This is the stop to slow down.
Insider tip ·
This is the best street in Daxi for unhurried facade photography — come in the late afternoon when the low sun rakes across the brickwork.

Youji Century Oil Rice
Running since 1862 and now on its fifth generation, this stall makes glutinous oil rice the traditional way — warm-butchered pork leg, Puli mushrooms, and local Taoyuan rice, soaked and hand-fried in small batches. Locals order it alongside pork bone-marrow soup and savory meat rolls, as the actual meal.
Insider tip ·
Seating is limited and shared — the shop uses privacy dividers between strangers at the same table, worth knowing before you arrive expecting a private table.

Qimeitang Grass Jelly
Tucked into a back alley near Fu-ren Temple, this dessert shop imports its grass jelly technique from Penghu — the signature bowl is famous locally for how it "strings" when you lift a spoonful. An easy stop to miss without a local pointing you to the alley.
Insider tip ·
End the walk here — it's a five-minute detour off Heping Road and the perfect cooldown after a couple of hours on your feet in Daxi's afternoon heat.

Practical Notes
Best season: October–April for comfortable walking temperatures; avoid the Datieliao and Zhaiming trails in typhoon season (roughly July–September) due to slippery stone paths and stream crossings.
Getting around: The Old Street Walk is entirely on foot. The Forest Trail and Dahan River Route both benefit from a car or scooter — public buses run infrequently to the trailheads (Taoyuan Bus routes 5091/5104/5106/5109 serve the Sanceng/Datieliao stop).
Bicycle rental: Several small rental shops cluster near Daxi Bridge for the river route; no need to pre-book on weekdays.
Festivals worth planning around: Fu-ren Temple's decadal Sacred Pig ceremony (lunar Feb 11) and Puji Tang's Guan Gong procession (lunar Jun 24, Daxi's largest annual event, locally called the town's 'second New Year').
